Courtyard Bungalow, Akola

Straight Lines ,Clean and Classy

The Courtyard Bungalow spatial planning was a result of many cultural and sociological factors. The planning was done in such a way that all the four brothers had the collective and individual entity at the same time. Each floor consists of two 3bhk apartments. One for individual brother. The house was divided into multiple layers. Lobby would filter the people coming to the house. The courtyard became the second layer and was used during the summer evenings and nights for relaxation. A corridor running around the courtyard separated it from the more intimate living spaces which were restricted to family members and the women of the house. Courtyard also creates stack effect in the house where hot air rises up to get outside and cooler air settles down  keeping the courtyard cooler by at least 7 degree from outside.

Akola city in Vidarbha, India has a rich heritage with numerous buildings dating back to the 19th century. The site for this house lies along a arterial road and is on the peripheral edge of an extensive plotted development for private homes. The house is planned to allude to the traditional Indian courtyard house in        response to the climate of the location. Temperatures in the lengthy summer months are in excess of 45° C, with the sun in the southern hemisphere.
